Before and After

About 10 minutes before the "incident". See that wooden border, innocently hanging out in the background?
...it leaves a mark. 3 stitches for a 3 year old.

I'm still very upset with the ER doctors. They elected to hold him down for the stitches instead of sedation. It was traumatic for all involved.

About the holding down in lieu of freezing...nothing's changed on this score in 37 years. My daughter at age 3 was taken to Emerg with a similar cut in the eyebrow and it was explained that with a cut so close to the bone, the number of needles required to freeze would outnumber the sutures to be given, so less trauma overall. Those folks really do know what they're doing. It's just hard to remember that when it's your kid being held down and sewn up with no freezing. Kisses for that dear little angel. XXX ..and a hug for you, Rainyday. {{{ hug }}}

Aw Aimee, i'm so sorry it was such a terrible experience!! Traumatic, horrible, hopefully never again!!! You're such a great mom that i'm sure he'll be ready to move away from it...parents are usually more traumatized. Just remember you know him best, they don't know him at all and how he responds to these types of experiences and IF IF IF this happens again you can request for sedation or at least happy relaxing juice. You da momma and YOU HAVE THE POWA (and they gotta listen to you!)!!! I hope you enjoyed your big ole glass of wine :)

Thanks, MazGal and Shannon. He's still talking about how those doctors made him very angry. And how he was using his words, trying to get them to stop. We've talked about how brave he was and how proud we are that he used his words... BUT that the drs were trying to help him.

He did have some topical freezing, which was helpful. But he was terrified, with 5 adults standing around him, some holding him down, some poking his face. But he's resilient. He'll bounce back much quicker than I will!I It was so hard to witness.

It was only 3 stitches - a little boy down the hall was getting much more on his foot. His father came to check on us afterwards, due to all the screaming. And said, with great relief, that his little guy had already been sedated.

I'm still upset with the drs, but know they were doing their best to get him out of there quickly. I am more upset that it was a student dr learning on my boys face, so that made things slower and maybe even more painful than necessary.

The poor student dr, too. I could tell she was very shaken by the whole thing. She came back afterwards with a popsicle for him, very apologetic.

HOLY SMOKES! oh man, so sorry this happened. Ugh, dang playgrounds.

Dang playgrounds is so true!! Other than forbidding them to run, I don't think I could have prevented this one, either. Stupid energetic boys.
