Anxiety becomes me?

I've never had a full blown attack before, but came toooo close this week. I spent a few days down at my mom's with the boys. Jay stayed home to get some renos done. There were some last minute changes on Tuesday morning and we ended up leaving to come home around 8 am instead of noon. My mom had to leave at 6am to go get my brother at the airport, so when the boys got up and we were all ready, we left early.

Pilfered tomato from Nanny's garden

I took them to a wilderness park I went to lots and lots as a child. It's secluded, off the side of a back road. In the woods. Very beautiful. But I was nervous pulling into the empty lot. I was cautious when we started walking the trails. What if someone came after us? No cell coverage. No one knew we were there or had even headed in that direction.

At the half way mark, I was sucking in deep breaths, trying to release the painful tightness in my chest. Felix snapped a twig and I froze. It was awful. I was panicking, picturing all sorts of horrible things, thinking I was going to collapse right there and scare the boys... I couldn't wait to get out of the woods and the boys were having a blast. When we finally left, we needed a pit stop at the outhouses at the other end of the lot, so I tossed the boys in their seat (without buckling them in) and coasted 50 feet to the path to the bathrooms. Then hurried the boys up as much as possible. Elliot decided he had to poop, of course.

Then I bundled everyone in the car and locked the doors before getting ready to leave. It took a while for me to settle.

WTF? Yes, I'm normally an anxious person, and my imagination does get the best of me but this was just craziness. I don't know if I was picking up on possibilities in the air or what. I have heard of anxieties cranking up like this after you have kids, because now you've got their little lives to worry about, too. But wow.

Also, I'd slept funny the night before and had a sore spot on my neck. I tried to massage it out as I drove and it was feeling a bit better. We stopped for lunch over 2 hours later, went into the food court at a grocery store and I was hit with blinding, stabbing pain in my eyes and head. It throbbed - a combo migraine/tension headache, I think. I fumbled through getting the boys settled - all the while holding my head - and then ran over to the pharmacy across the store (I could see the tops of their heads the whole time) to get some advil. I thought I was going to puke. I couldn't eat anything. It was almost an hour before the pills kicked in. By time we got back to the car, I was crying and shaking. The boys were afraid. I sat with the air conditioning blasting and sipped coffee and water until I felt ok to drive. Surprisingly, I was fine for the rest of the day.  Which was good, since I took the boys to a farm on the way home!

So, dear readers, what do you think? Was the headache related to the panic attack?? Brain tumour? Stupid stress from driving and being pissed at my husband for not coming with us and actually going in to work on his vacation week? (And mine too - I planned all this when he found out - months ago - what lone week he'd have off this summer. And now he's taking 1 day off - maybe) ??? But I digress...
{Edit: ok, so I stand corrected - it's a "hiatus" week, wherein there's no work for most of the employees, but since dear hubs is in management, work came up and someone has to do it. Still pissed at the situation, but whatever.}

In other related news and backstory, I'm still weaning off my antidepressants. Taking them every 4 days now. (Tuesday, or DoomsDay -  would have been day 3, in the first 4-day stretch)  Oh, and apparently weaned Felix this weekend as he hasn't nursed since Saturday. Plus, with my period due this week, I'm a total perfect hormonal storm.

I did manage to get in to see my doctor yesterday. Had both boys with me, too. Lovely long wait to see her. They were in fine form when we got in, so she got to see what I deal with. Hehe.

My thyroid levels are fine. Keeping the synthroid dose as is, will do blood work and re-eval in 6 months.

She advised against the switch to every 4 days for my ADs right now. So I'll stay on every 3 for the next few weeks and see her again in a month. And we'll talk more about my health: weight, etc, then, too.

She is against me switching to the IUD. She feels that it won't be enough of a drop in hormones from the pill and since I'm already anxious about the IUD that it's not right for me.

She gave me a referral to the psychologists who work in the practice. And she's going to try to get me back in to the mental health division at the women's hospital - but only if she can get me directly to the good psych, not the crazy unprofessional twit I saw last time.

So, I'm holding. I'm looking at a few other options, too - like frequent massages and a yoga class. And getting back into meditation.

Nip check, revisited

So. The pain got better after going on a 2 week course of anti-fungal medication, paired with the most awesome All Purpose Nipple Ointment by Dr. Jack Newman. But the pain came back within 5 days of finishing the meds. So I convinced my doctor to put me back on them. I'm a week in. the nipple pain is improving.

BUT NOW I HAVE MASTITIS!!!!!

I have been terrified of mastitis for the past 3.5 years. I do tend to get blocked ducts but thankfully they've never gone beyond a simple (yet painful) blockage.

Oh sweet jeebus, this is painful. it started last night. I see my doctor in a few hours to get some antibiotics, hopefully. At least the fever broke and the puking stopped. That's something to celebrate, I guess.

Nip check

Ok, time for a nip update! (YAY!)

Still haven't seen my doctor. Things got a bit better, but now they're getting painful again. And it's a different pain. A deeper pain. One that makes me think that yeast is at work here. So, the plan is to see my dr Tuesday morning. (I can wait 3 more days, right?) and get a prescription for diflucan, an antifungal, as well as for the All Purpose Nipple Ointment. Plus, I'll pick up some Gentian Violet. Between those 3 things, and the probiotic and garlic supplements I'm taking along with not eating any sugar (you hear me, missy - NOT eating sugar) and things should be back under control within a few weeks. The pain should be cleared up within a week, the yeast will take a bit longer to be beaten into submission.

Now my nips have been discussed, lets move on to a funner subject. Christmas! We had a good one. The boys were excited - Elliot had. to. play. with. each. gift. after. it. was. unwrapped. And Felix wasn't really interested in unwrapping, but he would get fixated on certain gifts for 10-15 minutes (like a little whisk!) So things went rather slow.

Decorating, 2 weeks before Santa came

Christmas morning

His very own whisk!

D-E-V-O-N.... that says Elliot!!!!!! He knows how to spell his name, but when presents are involved, book-learnin' goes out the window!

Birthdays and bouncy castles

Today is Elliot's 3rd birthday. We had a party. Ate some cake. Had a toddler cage match in the bouncy castle (yep, instigated by my son. He ended up in time out for deliberately jumping on his friends and dragging them to the ground. And upon being allowed back in the bouncer, in quick succession, he shoved one friend, kicked another and bit a third. Fun times at Elliot's house today!)

Elliot's birth story, in honour of the day...

The first contractions started at 9am on my due date, September 18th. They didn't really hurt, but they were coming every 30 minutes. I went on with my day (a chiropractic appointment and lunch with friends) and they got more intense. By 4pm, they started to hurt. By 8pm we called our doula, Karen, and she said she would stop by to check on me at 9. From 9-1, I spent my time throwing up and labouring in the tub, on the exercise ball and in bed, the contractions coming irregularly but still getting closer together. By 1:30, they were 2-3 minutes apart and lasting anywhere from 30-60 seconds, and I heard Karen say quietly to Jay "I think we should start making our way to the hospital."

We got to the hospital by 2:30 and they checked me - only a fingertip dilated and still a lot of thinning needed to be done! I was crushed - I had been having very hard pains (especially in my low back) for almost 12 hours and made no "real" progress.

The nurse took pity on us and asked if we wanted to stay in assessment, as my contractions were still coming regularly. I told them I was not going home without my baby! They put us into a birthing room to labour but did not admit us to the hospital. (Turns out I was part of a research study – should they let women in early labour wait it out at the hospital or send them home – and how would it effect baby.)

The nurses pretty much left us alone all night - we were checked on a few times, but since we were not admitted, they stayed away. I threw up more, walked the halls, had baths and tried sitting on the ball. My back was so sore - Jay and Karen took turns pressing on my sacrum during contractions to ease the pressure. I was terrified I was having back labour.

The next morning, the new early labour assessment nurse came in to check me and said I was only 2-3 cm dilated, and still needed to thin quite a bit. She started saying that I might be stalled and that I should go home. She pushed that I should also let them break my water and get induced.

Around 3pm, she checked me again and there was no change. She told me that if she had been on duty the night before that she wouldn't have let us stay. (I guess she did not know about the study.) She asked if I wanted to be admitted and start getting medications. I was exhausted at this point, but knew that despite the slow progress, I was making SOME progress, and that I wouldn't have been able to cope at home.

I asked not to be admitted, but requested a shot of Demerol to help me relax, hoping I could get some sleep. It relaxed me, but there was no sleep to be had - the contractions picked up and became very regular and I was then in active labour!

The nurse checked me around 6pm and said I was at 3 cm and that they would start the admissions procedures. Around 7, they moved us to a new room closer to the nurses station, assigned us a nurse, and started monitoring my blood pressure and the baby’s heart rate every 30 minutes.

The back pains and pains shooting down my thighs had greatly intensified. I needed someone to rub my thighs and press on my back during each contraction. Around midnight, I was checked again and heard 4-5 cm, still not completely effaced. I was so discouraged! Somewhere in the middle of the night I started asking about medications - but I knew that Demerol likely wouldn't work again, that I didn't want an epidural and that the Nitrous Oxide gas could only be used for a limited time, and I wanted to save that for transition. I decided to keep going without anything. I had found a position in the rocking chair that helped control the pain, and I was really focusing on a light socket above the bed. Usually I could manage the contractions, but every 3rd or 4th one was super-intense.

Finally around 2am, I was 7 cm. YAY! I laboured for a while longer, and nearly gave up a few more times. They checked and felt bulging membranes, as my water still had not broken. I agreed to have them broken and we waited 30 minutes for my doctor to arrive. When they broke, it was only a small amount, but baby's head came down a bit further.

After a while, I felt strong urges to push so they checked me again - still only 7cm - NOT good! They started me on the gas to try to control the urge, and we tried different positions - walking, hands & knees, the ball - but I still badly wanted to push. A new nurse came in to let the other one have a break and she put me on the toilet so gravity could help. I fought her on this, since I was scared that my natural instinct to push would be much stronger on the toilet! She found a longer hose for the gas machine so I could sit there and suck back the gas…

They checked me again at nearly 6:30 am and said I was completely effaced and dilated and gave me the go ahead to start pushing! Sitting on the toilet worked! They called my doctor in. After an hour of ineffective pushes, they checked and found that I still had a lip of cervix!! They pushed against it while I contracted and pushed (PAINFUL!) and it stayed back out of the way.

I pushed for almost 2 more hours before our son was born. We had requested that the sex of the baby not be announced to the room. I wanted Jay to be the first to look and see and then tell me. after the baby came out (with Jay watching everything from the first tufts of hair trying to be born, to crowning, to the explosion of the baby quickly slithering out) he came up to my head and kissed me, telling me "you did it, you were great" and we had a moment.... then I noticed the room was quiet (other than baby cries) and I had to ask Jay to check to see if it was a boy or a girl. He looked and came back to kiss me again, all teary eyed, and tell me we had a son. Then he finally remembered to get the camera and take some pictures!

(A few hours old)

He came out screaming and didn't stop for 20 minutes! His head came out with no problems, but he decided to be like superman and have his fist up next to his shoulder (explained all the back pain) and I ended up with a 3rd degree tear. They had to call in an OB to determine which way to best stitch the muscles back together.

Perfectly normal

A month ago I thought I might be pregnant. This was terrifying and exciting news. Jay wasn't thrilled. I'm still holding out hope that he may be on board for a attempting third in about a year or so from now, but it's kinda slim hope. Stuffed under a bed in a dark corner but trying to drag itself out by its teeth kind of hope. We'll see. I haven't yet gotten my periods back since having Felix, but I'm on the pill. It's making for some confusing months. And many (negative) pregnancy tests. My body has been feeling for months now that my period may be around the corner, but so far she's just stalking me, I guess. I saw my doctor 2 weeks ago and got a prescription for my old pill with the normal hormones in it (I'm currently on the minipill)... this pill will bring back Aunt Flo, ready or not.

I was also sent for blood work. Mostly to check my thyroid function to monitor things since I developed a supposedly benign nodule on my thyroid whilst prego. But also a full blood work up, since I haven't had the standard stuff tested in well over a year.

I also went for xrays on my "mother's wrist", since there was the possibility that on top of the tendinitis, I may have a fracture or bone spur or other such growth causing the pain. It's still interfering with day to day life and may need to be surgically corrected (EEP!) since stretches, chiro, massage and osteo haven't helped. I'm wearing a brace 60% of the time, too.

Went for the follow up appointment today to get the results. And the news is - wait for it - I'm perfectly normal. Even my stupid wrist. So I'm now going to go for physio to do what i can to strengthen it.

And I saw my dentist today.

Back story: When I was 36 weeks pregnant with Elliot (yes, 3 years ago now) I had a root canal done because my face exploded into pain and I didn't sleep for nearly a week and had multiple emergency dental visits. At first, they wouldn't do an xray to confirm things, just made their decision to do the root canal based on my previous xrays that showed deterioration. The next day, I was still in immense pain and I demanded the xray. It showed that the tooth next to the one they worked on ALSO (instead of??) needed desperate work. Not a full root canal, but a 'pulpectomy'. Lovely, huh? After they fixed that, I felt so much better.

The first root canal was re-cleaned and capped 10 weeks later. Then crowned. It never felt 'right', but not having a root canal before, I figured it was normal. Lately, it's been hurting more than usual, so I had it checked. There's an infection. And there shouldn't be an infection because I don't have a root on that tooth and everything should be sealed up super tight.

So now I'm waiting to hear from a specialist to see if they are going to drill down through the crown and redo the root canal or if it's going to have to be a more extensive surgery where they go in through the jaw bone.

Up until 3 years ago, I didn't have a fear of dentists. *shudder*

On that ever-so-cheerful note, I will end here and go to bed. Had a long day today and tomorrow both boys are home so it promises to be extra special. Sleep, followed by more sleep, then some coffee, will help.

Good night, dear reader!

The whole l.o.n.g. story

Settle in, dear reader. This is a long tale.

Felix’s birth story really starts on May 14th, 2008, when my water broke as I was walking with my friend, her daughter and Elliot. We hustled back to my friend's house and she kept Elliot while her husband drove me to the hospital. Jay met me there. We waited, they did “the test” and confirmed that it was amniotic fluid. I was told I likely wasn’t going to be going home without my baby, and that if I didn’t go into labour that I was going to be on bed rest for the rest of the pregnancy.

They hooked me up to an IV for antibiotics to prevent uterine infection and gave me steroid shots to help mature the baby’s lungs in case of early and unpreventable labour. So I spent 5 days in the hospital. After the first 48 hours, the IV came out and I continued the antibiotics orally for another 48 hours. On day 4, they let me come home on a day pass. Jay and Elliot were scrubbing the floors when I walked through the door. I curled up on the couch with Elliot and we read books. That afternoon, Jay dug the second hand wheelchair he’d purchased from a yard sale on a whim the year before out of the basement and we went for a walk in the sunshine.

I went back to the hospital after Elliot went to bed that night. The next morning, they did an ultrasound to determine how much amniotic fluid was surrounding the baby. It was my 3rd ultrasound since going into the hospital. Again, I was asked if I wanted to know Boo’s sex. Somehow, I held my ground and kept it a surprise! Since I hadn’t leaked any more fluid or had any contractions and since there was plenty of fluid left, I was released from the hospital and sent home on “modified bed rest”. I could get up to go to the bathroom and things like that, but no sex (yeah, because at 31 weeks pregnant, that was high on my to-do list!) and no heavy lifting or long walks.

Thankfully, we still had a nanny in place for Elliot, since I was supposed to have a month left at work and Jay had gone back to work as well. So our wonderful, temporary nanny got to keep her position until the end of June, when I was finally allowed off bedrest. Everyone thought that as soon as the bedrest ended, I’d go into labour. But as the days past, it was proven to not be the case. My first due date went by. Then the second. Then the third.

Sunday night, July 27th, I had contractions every 10 minutes for almost 2 hours. I went to bed thinking that this might finally be it!! But, either I slept through them or they stopped, and nothing happened. I was disappointed.

Monday morning, I dropped Elliot off a friend's house and her husband drove me to my doctor’s appointment. I was planning to have the doctor strip my membranes if possible. Since I’d been 2 cm dilated for 3 weeks already but not effaced, I was getting discouraged. According to my dates, I was 5 days overdue – according to my doctor, I was already 9 days overdue, so we talked about induction. My doctor wanted me to meet with the induction clinic the next day, after I had an ultrasound to check on fluid levels and make sure Boo was ok.

When Dr. L examined me in her office, she said I was 2-3 cm and I was starting to get stretchy, but still quite thick. I was disappointed and asked if there had been any effacement. She replied that I was maybe 40% thinned. She asked if I wanted her to strip my membranes, and I told her to go for it! It was not comfortable but it was tolerable. I felt a bit of cramping and had discharge afterwards.

I called for my ride after my appointment. Elliot and I had a slow walk home from our friend's house in the rain and he splashed in all the puddles he could find. (Our usual 10 minute walk took half an hour!) I put him down for his nap and finished some things around the house and returned phone calls. I called my naturopath’s office to ask if there were any herbs I could be taking to help speed things along and avoid the induction. The receptionist said she would call back the next day with information. I finally lay down on the couch for a nap around noon. I didn’t get any sleep as the cats went crazy – meowing and scratching the furniture, and the phone kept ringing. Just as I started to drift off, Elliot woke up from his nap.

I realized that the whole time I was on the couch, I’d been having mild contractions every 10 minutes. I was hopeful, but trying not to get my hopes up. I got Elliot up and gave him some lunch. We hung out in the house, reading books and rolling balls back and forth to each other on the floor. I drank the last of my raspberry leaf tea. We went for a walk around the block.

When we got back, I rested for a bit and then decided to clean up all the toys that were lying around the house. My contractions started to get closer together (8-9 minutes) and they were getting uncomfortable. I had to stop a few times while picking up toys. I lay down on the couch around 5 and we watched some TV. I was watching the clock, thinking that maybe I should call Jay and get him to leave work early. I decided not to, as the contractions were still manageable and he would be home by 6:30.

At 6pm, I started supper for Elliot. We were having fajitas. The can opener ceased up – I was getting really frustrated and the contractions were starting to hurt and get much closer together. I finally opened the can of refried beans by repeatedly biting the can opener all around the edges of the can. I got Elliot in his chair and sat down at my computer while he ate. At 6:30, I had the first really painful contraction where I needed to vocalize with the pain.

I didn’t want to make much noise, as Elliot got very concerned when someone was hurt. So I said “Ahhhhhhhhhhhh – Elliot, can you say ‘Ahhhhhhhh’ with Mommy?” He replied, “Sing, mommy. Sing ‘Hush Little Mermaid’” Luckily the contraction ended there and I had the song on the computer, so we played that. Just then Jay walked through the door and I practically knocked him down with my enthusiasm that he was home. I filled him in on my contractions getting closer together and asked him to call Karen, our doula. I chatted with her for a while to explain what was happening and to make a plan – she was just sitting down to supper but would call me in an hour and we would reevaluate. I was going to lie down to see get some rest and see if anything changed. The contractions were averaging 6 minutes apart at his point. Jay took over making sure Elliot had his supper, and he gave his father and stepmother a call to see if they could come over to help with bedtime and stay the night with Elliot.

We also called my mother – I left her a message asking if she wanted to hop in her car and drive 4 hours to come spend some time with Elliot as we were pretty sure I was in labour for real. Mom called back a few minutes later and said she would leave early in the morning and come over. This worked well, since Jay's dad and stepmom both had to work in the morning. Mom asked why I wasn’t already en route to the hospital when I told her my contractions were 6 minutes apart. I told her I still had lots of time.

I went to lay down around 7 while Jay played with Elliot and then started the bath. I heard Jay's parents arrive around 7:30, but they stayed downstairs and Jay finished the bath. While I was laying down, I started to feel pain in my lower back and upper thighs with each one and that concerned me as it was what indicated back labour with Elliot, and it didn’t start up with him until I was at least 5 cm dilated. Karen called and I told her things were ramping up. She said she would be there within the hour.

After his bath, Elliot wanted a story and I had just finished a contraction so he snuggled with me on the bed and we read. Jay tucked Elliot in just as another one hit me. By this time, the contractions were much closer together – 5 minutes for sure – and I had to vocalize through them.

After Elliot was in bed, Jay was able to come in and support me during contractions. I found it comfortable to sit on the edge of the bed and lean backwards onto the bed as far as I could without falling over. When Jay was there, he would press on my sacrum. Since I had been feeling nauseous, Jay had brought a bowl upstairs with us when I first went to lie down. Luckily, he had, since I then started throwing up my very light supper of yogurt and toast (there was no way I felt up to eating fajitas!) This is when I felt certain it wasn’t false labour. (Not sure why I waited that long to be so sure it was real!)

Jay went back downstairs to check in with his dad and give them some instructions. Then he came back upstairs and started packing his bag for the hospital. Finally, Karen arrived around 8:30. Jay says my whole body relaxed the second she walked into the room. All I know is the contractions suddenly got a whole lot stronger and closer together!

They both supported me very well - I stood and clung to Jay with each one and Karen pressed hard on my sacrum. Karen suggested I try labouring in a hands and knees position to take the pressure off of my back, so we stacked some pillows on the bed (after I threw up some more) and I positioned myself the best I could. Karen did counter pressure on my hips with the contractions. I felt a sliding movement inside and there was a sudden burst of pressure between my legs. I expected my water to break and was worried about my sheets because Jay's parents were spending the night, but nothing happened. In this position, the contractions lasted longer but slowed down a bit. I heard Karen quietly ask Jay if all our bags were packed and ready to go. She said she would take them out to the car and that we should probably go get me checked out since the contractions were coming every 1-2 minutes.

Finally we were ready to go to the hospital. I decided to pee first, but was scared of having contractions on the toilet because of the pain, but I made it through. (And did indeed have one while sitting there.) We had to stop twice for contractions while going down the stairs.

Jay helped put my shoes on and his stepmom came out of the living room to ask how I was doing and if there was anything I needed. I don’t remember what I said to her – I know it was short but polite. I didn’t really say much at all and really let Jay do the talking. I know for sure I scared the crap out of them - they didn't expect me to be in full labour when they got there! We made it outside, but had to stop at the bottom of the front steps and again on the side of the road before I could get in the car.

We arrived at the hospital by 9:30 and eventually made it into the admitting room – I had to stop several times. Contractions were very intense while I sat in the chair and Jay had to find my health card in my wallet and sign the paperwork for me. We went upstairs to the Early Labour Assessment Unit. The Unit was full, so they had us wait in the EL lounge, a large room with several beds.

The nurse came to check on me. I was clinging to Jay during all my contractions. I heard her ask them how long I’d been hurting like this and if I wanted anything for pain. She knew my doula and didn’t expect me to want meds and so she quickly got on with the examination. When she said how far along I was, I missed the number but felt the change in both Jay and Karen. When the nurse left, they asked me if I’d heard – and excitedly told me I was already 7 cm dilated and fully effaced. I felt triumphant.

The nurse had gone to find us a room. Before she left, she said that if it came to it, I could deliver in that lounge. It wasn’t ideal, but it was equipped for it. I didn’t care at that point! They did find us a room and we slowly made our way down the hall. We were in Birth Unit #8. My room nurse was very young. I found out afterwards that she was very new to the Unit and so that was why many other nurses kept coming in to check on me, too.

My nurse needed to take some blood and that was very hard for me. I was still standing for all my contractions and they were getting more intense. I told her she better hurry, as they were so close together, but I did have at least one contraction with the needle in my arm. Another nurse came with paperwork for me to read over and sign. She went over the highlights with me – it was all routine stuff that I remembered from Elliot’s birth, but I kept contracting so I couldn’t focus too much. I scrawled my initials to say I’d read it.

I kept standing and clinging to Jay. Karen went to get us some water and to retrieve our bags from the car. She hand fed Jay a granola bar while we stood there – he hadn’t had a chance to eat supper.

My doctor arrived at 11, I was amused to notice she was still in the street clothes she wore at my appointment that morning. She checked me when I said I wanted to push and was feeling lots of pressure in my bum. Turns out I was 9.5 cm and had a tiny bit of cervix left. She asked if I wanted her to break my water. I looked to Karen for advice and she encouraged me, as I was so far along and it still hadn’t broken. During the next contraction, at 11:15pm, my dr broke my water and a few contractions later, she pushed the lip of cervix over the baby’s head. Karen said afterwards that a bit of the baby’s head was visible at that point. I asked to have my shoes removed and the nurses laughed as they sprang into action and took off my sandals, pants and underwear. My dr said she needed to get gloved and gowned because I was ready to push. I remember watching her walk away and saying “But I’m pushing now!” and I did start to push involuntarily.

Jay and Karen helped me turn onto my side, as it was a better position for the baby until my dr returned. I was screaming into Jay’s ear “I’m pushing” with each contraction. Finally, she came back and I started pushing for real at 11:25pm.

I was very vocal with my pushing, screaming and grunting. I had my head thrown backwards. My nurse encouraged me to focus and try not to be so loud – Jay says I rolled my eyes as I told her I would try but that I didn’t think it was possible and that it worked for me!

Karen told me later that one of the other nurses also started to say something about my pushing methods, but my dr interrupted her and said “It’s working for her – let her be. She’ll have a sore throat tomorrow though!”.

I felt the ring of fire as his head crowned. Man, that hurt! I remember it with Elliot, and it swear it wasn’t that intense. My dr told me the head was out and I needed to stop pushing. Suddenly, I had nurses holding my legs back as far as they would go and was told to PUSH! Finally, I felt his body slide out of me. It was 11:41pm. Jay says I got a crazy look in my eyes as I was staring at the ceiling, panting. Everyone was congratulating me, but I was upset because I had only heard a tiny wet baby gurgle, and no crying yet. I asked Jay if we had a boy or a girl. He asked if I wanted to know right away and I demanded to know. He left my head to go check and came back to say it was a boy. Felix Raphael, 9lbs 4oz, 20.25 inches long.

I noticed there were a lot more people in the room and that they had whisked Felix away without Jay cutting the cord. I don’t know who told me, but I found out his shoulders had gotten stuck and he needed help being born. My dr pulled one shoulder out before the other could be born. Also, the cord had been wrapped around his neck twice, and she had to carefully free him before starting to work on the shoulders. I still hadn’t heard any cries and kept asking if he was ok and why wasn’t he crying. Both Karen and Jay said they could see him and he looked ok and then we heard cries and I almost cried with relief. Finally, a nurse brought him over to me, all wrapped up in warm blankets. I don’t remember when I took off my shirt, but it was gone by this point.

My dr told me we were waiting for the placenta. I had been given a shot of oxytocin in my hip to help it release. She kept gently tugging on the cord, but nothing was happening. Looking at the cord, Jay said there was a huge knot in it. Apparently, Felix was one active boy! We had unwrapped Felix and he had been nuzzling at my breast but didn’t actually nurse. When things started to get intense, Jay took Felix for a bit. The nurse asked if she should call for an OB consult. My dr said we’d wait a bit longer, but it was coming up on the 30 minute mark, which wasn’t good. She said there was a finally trickle of blood, which indicated the placenta was starting to release. I tried pushing a bit more, but nothing happened and they called for the OB.

The OB (a youngish man) arrived and they explained the situation and he also tried having me push while he gentle tugged the cord. He did a quick internal and said he agreed that it felt like it was starting to separate, but since it had been so long our best options at this point was to try a manual extraction. Since I hadn’t had any pain meds and didn’t have an IV, they would have to give me phentanol for the pain. This was a one time thing – if they couldn’t remove it in the room, they would have to take me for surgery and give me an epidural or spinal tap. I said absolutely not and asked if we could wait 10-15 more minutes to see if it came out before going to the other options. He agreed. I felt like pushing a bit, so he pressed down really hard on my abdomen using a circular motion while I pushed and screamed a bit and it finally slid out.

The placenta was huge. Everyone commented on it. My dr checked it over extra carefully, due to me retaining pieces of placenta after Elliot’s birth, resulting in me needing a D&C procedure at 7 weeks post partum. She said it looked great. The paperwork I read later said it weighed 907g.

My dr then started repairing the 2nd degree tear. She used some local freezing, but it still hurt. Finally she was done and I snuggled with Felix some more. They brought me something to eat, and then I got up to pee and shower. Finally, our room on the Newborn Unit was ready, so they wheeled us up and got us settled into a ward. I was disappointed, because I thought I had signed for a private room, but they must have all been full. The ward had four beds, and three, including mine, were full.

Jay stayed until 3am, but then he took a cab home to relieve his parents and so he could be there to help Elliot ease into the transition the next morning.

They came to give Felix his first bath at 3:30. I finally got a good look at him with my glasses on as they unwrapped him. He was perfect.

One of the nurses commented to Jay the next day about how amazing I was. She said she had worked on the birth unit for the past 9 years and had recently transferred up to the newborn unit. She said she could tell by Felix’s brow shape that he’d had a difficult presentation for birth which for first time moms would have most likely resulted in a c-section. She said that the fact that I had made it through 100% unmedicated was amazing, especially when you factored in the shoulder dystocia, and that she was my biggest fan!. Not sure exactly what she was talking about – probably the pale divot on his forehead that may have looked like he was pressed firmly up against my hip bone or something during labour. The divot that turned into a prominent hemangioma birthmark that should disappear as he gets older.

I’m so pleased to have had the birth that I wanted. Looking back over it, I feel so strong and empowered. Look what I did!!!!!

Reunited, and it feels so good!

Just over 13 months ago, at 30 weeks pregnant with Felix, my water broke. I'd been out for a nice walk with a friend and her little girl. We went back to her house, she kept Elliot and fed him supper (then took him home, bathed him and put him to bed) and her husband drove me to the hospital. Long story short, everything resealed and I didn't go into labour. BUT, I ended up in the hospital for 5 days, hooked up to an IV getting antibiotics to keep possible infection at bay, and getting steroid shots to help mature the baby's lungs. The IV made me swell instantly. Before going home that night, Jay took my wedding and engagement rings with him.

I was pregnant and on bedrest for a very looooong time afterwards. The little stinker was 10 days overdue in the end! Bad swelling in my hands and feet. I had horrible carpal tunnel in the last weeks, which lasted about 8 weeks postpartum, too. Washing my hair was miserable, and it would take several attempts with numb, stupid fingers to get Felix latched on to nurse. My fingers never went back to their old size. I kept telling myself it was the extra weight I had yet to lose, that soon my rings would be back on in all their glory. And the days turned into weeks and months and finally a year, then longer still.

Last week, I said enough was enough. I went in to get them resized. Turns out, my ring finger is now a size 7/7.25. And my rings were both size 6.25. Yeah, not bloody likely to fit me any time soon! I got them sized to a 7. Picked them up today. (They still feel tight, but I'm hoping that's just the heat today, and the fact that I was actually jogging ~ !!! ~ this morning.)

Here they are - so pretty! Looking at this picture, man, my hands are in rough shape! Nails bitten to the quick, skin all dry and reptilian. Eeeew! But look, I have shiny bling! That makes everything better!

10 months

Where does the time go? 10 months ago, I was in labour, on my way to the hospital already dilated to 7 cm. That was one long car ride, even though it was probably less than 10 minutes. I remember the car ride while in labour with Elliot: I only had a few contractions. With Felix, I was contacting every 2-3 minutes. Very intense.

I look at my baby boy now and can't believe the changes. I still think of him as a baby. Well, yes he is still a baby, but he's also crawling and pulling up to a stand on anything he can. He will giggle and squirm away as fast as he can if you call out "What are you doing?" in a sing-song voice as he inspects something he shouldn't.

He's so mischievous. Especially when he thinks he's getting away with something. He was chewing on a phone cord while I was in an appointment yesterday. Everytime, I would say "ta-ta" and he'd take it out. After a while, he'd put it in his mouth and whip around to look at me, and he'd grin.

He said Dada today. Very clearly. I stopped, frozen. Thinking "Who said that? That wasn't Elliot's voice!" And so he's been babbling dada and shrieking it all day long. Ask him to say 'mama' and he'll whisper back 'dada'. Little stinker. But I love him dearly.

I'm on day 3 of my new diet. Finding the sugar/chocolate cravings a bit easier to deal with, but they've been especially challenging today. Decided not to wean from the antidepressant just yet. After enduring 2 nights of withdrawal symptoms in the form of shakes and nausea, I just don't want to deal with that now. I'll try again in a few more weeks. And that time, I'll do it differently - break open the capsule and remove part of the medication, so I take a smaller dose each day over a 6-8 week period.

We'll see.

Musings

I need some structure to my life. Some creativity. I need to get back into writing. Into living. Into doing something that doesn't involve changing diapers and having children strapped to me or screaming at me or running circles around me. I love my boys, but they need a sane mama, and I'm not-so-slowly and very surely heading down the road to a Very Bad Place.

So I turn to Blogging. I haven't kept a diary since I was a teenager. I still have the last diary I wrote. I labeled it "Bedtime Stories" and kept it on my bookshelf. It's one of those flimsy lock & key styles, white with a winter scene on the front. What did I write in there? What was so important? I read Jay a passage from it when I was pregnant. Some rant from when I was under 18 where I'd spent pages writing about how I wanted a baby. Someone to love and who would love me back, I think were the exact words I used. Jay found it frightening and amusing that I wanted a baby for so long. That I put it into my diary.

Then I had that baby. Granted, it took nearly 10 years before actually making that baby. I never said I was a stupid teenager! I loved being pregnant with Elliot. Loved my big belly. For the first time in my life, I loved how I looked, how I felt. It was nothing short of magical. Even towards the end, when I was full of aches and pains and wasn't sleeping well and was so cranky... I loved it.

Imagine my surprise when I was pregnant with Felix and it didn't feel as wonderful. Everything hurt sooner. I was sicker. Jay went away for the whole first trimester so I was parenting a toddler by myself, sick as a dog. I showed early. Stayed sick well into the second trimester. Ended up back at work because Jay had been laid off, worked my butt off and then landed in the hospital at 30 weeks when my water broke. Ended up on bed rest for the duration of the pregnancy. (And, oh yes, he was 10 days overdue!) I was miserable. But I still had a fondness for my big baby belly. I miss it.

Where was I?

Oh yes. Structure. Creativity. Life.

I spend my days chasing the boys around. Spending waaaay too much time in front of the computer messing around, losing patience with the kids and dreading nap time. It's a battle to get them both down for a nap. Nevermind both - it's getting one down while the other is still awake and shrieking in the next room. I. Hate. It.

No wonder I drink. And suck chocolate into my body like oxygen. I seriously don't even taste the stuff anymore. Stupid addictive personality.

Today, I polished off a 100g Organic Milk Chocolate & Almond bar in nanoseconds while preparing supper. And still craved more. I'm forcing myself to sip my "the boys are in bed - end of day" celebratory wine so that it can last, but I want to guzzle it like the chocolate.

I'm hoping words can soothe me. That if I write long enough I can make sense of everything and find some peace and balance again. That maybe I can wean myself off the antidepressants that I need to be a sane & happy & non-yelling mama. (And yes, I know I shouldn't be drinking while on meds, but it's one glass, so there.)

Well, it's a start. A jumbled, convoluted mess of words, but it's a start.
